The Belgian synthpop group Telex was formed in 1978 by Marc Moulin, Dan Lacksman and Michel Moers, with the intention of "Making something really European, different from rock, without guitar - and the idea was electronic music." Mixing the aesthetics of disco, punk and experimental electronic music, they released a stripped-down synthesized cover version of "Twist à St. Tropez" by Les Chats Sauvages.
They followed up with an ultra-slow cover of "Rock Around the Clock", a hilariously relaxed and dispassionate version of one-hit-wonder Plastic Bertrand's punk song "Ça Plane Pour Moi", and a perversely mechanical cover of "Dance to the Music", originally by Sly Stone.
Like Kraftwerk, Telex built their music entirely from electronic instruments, and the sounds of the two groups have a certain similarity. However, unlike Kraftwerk's studied Teutonic irony, Telex favour a more joyously irreverent humour.
Their debut album, "Looking for Saint Tropez", featured the worldwide hit single "Moskow Diskow", one of the first ever electronic dance/pop songs.
In 1980 Telex's manager asked them to enter for the Eurovision Song Contest. They entered, and were eventually sent to the finals, although they apparently hoped to come last: "We had hoped to finish last, but Portugal decided otherwise. We got ten points from them and finished on the 19th spot" (Marc Moulin)
Their song "Euro-Vision" was a cheerful bleepy song with deliberately banal lyrics about the contest itself.
The Eurovision audience seemed unsure how to react to the performance, and after the band stopped playing there was mostly stunned silence, with scattered polite applause; Marc Moulin took a photograph of the bewildered audience. The band walked off amidst sounds of muttering. A mark of the confusion caused by the performance was when vote-counting began, and Greece awarded Belgium three points, the announcer thought she had misheard and tried to award the points to The Netherlands.

16 Bit - Where Are You
Sven Väth (born 26 October 1964 near Frankfurt, Germany) is a DJ who has produced a large body of work since his career began in 1982. He was also one of the founders of legendary trance music labels Harthouse and the now-defunct Eye Q, as well as being among the very first DJs to play trance records. In 1995 Mixmag rated his album Accident in Paradise one of the top-50 dance albums of all time; although the title track is a fast techno piece, the rest is far more sedate, such as the track "Coda," which features merely a flute and a harpsichord.
Väth is also known as R U Ready and Sam Vision. He has been a member of the groups 16 Bit, Astral Pilot, Barbarella, the Essence of Nature, Metal Master, Metal Masters, Mosaic, and Off. Today he is the owner of the Cocoon Event Media GmbH, which contains his new Label, Cocoon Recordings. He is also the owner of the Cocoon Club in Frankfurt.

Alan Rankine - The Sandman
Alan Rankine (born 17 May 1958, Edinburgh, Scotland) played keyboards, and guitars, for the rock band known as The Associates, which he co-founded with Billy Mackenzie in the late 1970s.
Together they recorded three albums: The Affectionate Punch (1980), Fourth Drawer Down (1981) and Sulk (1982). The alchemy between Rankine's multi-instrument talents and MacKenzie's multi-octave voice (and cryptic lyrics) resulted in a collection of songs which remain unclassifiable even today.[citation needed] Rankine left the band in 1982 on the eve of what would have been the Sulk tour.
While Mackenzie continued with other associates, Rankine started a solo career as a recording artist. He recorded three solo albums: Pink Pound (1986), She Loves Me Not (1987) and the fully instrumental The Big Picture Sucks (1989).
Then he became a record producer, producing such artists as The Pale Fountains, Cocteau Twins and Paul Haig, before joining the Belgian independent record label, Les Disques du Crepuscule, as a permanent producer and relocating to Brussels.
Rankine eventually came back to Scotland, and he now works in Stow College in Glasgow.

Karen finley - Tales Of Taboo
Karen Finley (b. 1956, Evanston, Illinois) is a controversial American performance artist, whose theatrical pieces and recordings have often been labelled "obscene" due to their graphic depictions of sexuality, abuse, and disenfranchisement. She was notably one of the NEA Four, four performance artists whose grants from the National Endowment for the Arts were vetoed in 1990 by John Frohnmayer after the process was condemned by Senator Jesse Helms under "decency" issues.
Finley's early recordings featured her ranting crass monologues over disco beats (and she would often perform her songs late night at the famed club Danceteria, where she worked). These recordings include the singles "Tales of Taboo" from 1986 and "Lick It" from 1988 (both produced by Madonna collaborator Mark Kamins) plus the 1988 album, The Truth Is Hard To Swallow (re-released on CD, with a slightly different track listing, as Fear Of Living in 1994; in conjunction with the re-release, both "Tales Of Taboo" and "Lick It" appeared on 12-inch again with new remixes by Super DJ Dmitry, Junior Vasquez, and other DJs of note). She also made a guest appearance on a remix of Sinéad O'Connor's "Jump in the River," and was prominently sampled by S'Express on the classic dance floor cut-up, "Theme from S'Express" (her "Drop that ghetto blaster/suck me off" vocal - sampled from "Tales of Taboo" - formed something of a chorus in the song).

Hula - Black Wall Blue
The Sheffield based band Hula was founded in november 1980. Three members (Mark Albrow, Alan Fisch and Ron Wright) lived with Stephen Mallinder (Cabaret Voltaire) and Paul Widger (They must be Russians, Clock DVA, the Box) in a villa called Hula Kula. After trying the bass players Alan Watt, the notorious Chris Brain (Tense, NOS) and Mark Brydon (Chakk, Moloko), and after the replacement of Alan Fish (a.k.a. Fisch) by Nort (both drummed for the Cabs), Hula released Fever Car, which became an indie hit. Then they recorded the impressive album Murmur. Ingredients like cut ups, steady rhythms, and paranoia vocals were blended together into a unique white funky sound.
Hula recruited John Avery as a bass player. A bass player was necessary for the exciting live shows with lots of video material (Peter Care). Hula continued to bring out danceable 12 inches and more experimental albums. With this line-up Hula was more or less successful. International tours were made. Radio sessions for VPRO and John Peel were recorded and broadcasted. Being a support act for Depeche Mode implied performing live in Wembley Arena for huge crowds.
After Nort left the band in 1986 the music changed, but still remained interesting. Later on Mark Albrow quit as well. When their record company Red Rhino went bankrupt they moved on to Wax Trax. They released the last Hula record: a Jimmy Hendrix cover of Voodoo Chile. Afther the release, guest singer Jocelyn Cammack joined in officially. Ron moved on to bass and John to keyboards. In this new line up they made new songs. Intimates say these songs are the best Hula ever made. For the public it is hard to judge, for the material is still in the vaults of the studio. Eventually Hula broke up in 1992.

Crash Course In Science - Signals From Pier Thirteen
Crash Course in Science (CCIS) is an electronic musical group that was formed in 1979. The band was formed as a way to explore performance art and music, which the members desperately needed to express. Choosing toy instruments and live drums out of necessity, CCIS began to experiment with a series of analog recording devices. The instruments gave way to crude drum machines and ‘Frankenstein’ type homemade instruments. CCIS was ready to record the Signals From Pier Thirteen. Signals From Pier Thirteen was released in the U.S.A. and England in 1981. This 12” EP contained the songs ‘Cardboard Lamb’ and ‘Flying Turns’ which are two of the bands most recognizable tracks. This record has been regarded as influential to the techno industrial genres and was an early inception of what is now known as the ‘electro’ sound. This record is still highly sought-after by collectors and fans today. Now Planete Rouge releases this high class collector record with 3 brand new remixes. One remix made by the Crash Course in Science band themselves in 2006!!! Amazing up-to-date remix done by the original members, which sounds incredibly like the music of now. Another remix is made by Vitalic , which is gonna be a classic hymn for clubs as always, when Vitalic reworks a track. And the last remix is done by David Carretta who gives another dimension to the original track. Crash Course In Science has been many times sampled by the artists of today — now you know where the original comes from.

He Said - Pump
Edvard Graham Lewis is an artist whose career has spanned twenty years and nearly as many music styles. From his beginings with Wire (pictured at right, from left to right, Newman, Gilbert, Gotobed, and Lewis), through his colaborations with fellow Wire-mate Bruce Gilbert (Dome, Duet Emmo, Cupol, P'O, MZUI), to his solo project and recent colaborations (He Said, H.A.L.O., He Said Omala, Ocsid, Hox), he has been responsible for much ground-breaking and style-setting work.
Lewis's solo work was done under the name He Said. Released in 1986, the same year as Wire's reformation, the first album, "Hail!" includes contributions by Gilbert, John Fryer, Brian Eno, Anglea Conway and others. The follow-up, "Take Care", was released in 1989.

Torch Song - White Night
Torch Song was a British synthpop and dance band of the early 1980s consisting of William Orbit, Laurie Mayer and Grant Gilbert. In 1985, Grant left to pursue other projects and long-time friend Rico Conning officially joined the group. After the release of 'Exhibit A' in 1987, Torch Song as a group was put on the back-burner while William concentrated on solo work and remixes. He continued to write with both Laurie and Rico and in 1995 they released 'Toward the Unknown Region.

Stanton Miranda - Wheels Over Indian Trails
Stanton Miranda takes multi-tasking to extremes: singer/songwriter/actor/performance artist. Her avant-garde pop and folk-tinged songs contain elements which both settle, and unease. Besides being a solo singer/songwriter and one half of new-wave art band Thick Pigeon; New York-based Miranda also played in the band ckm, put together by visual artist Dan Graham, with Christine Hahn (ex Malaria) and Kim Gordon (later of Sonic Youth).

T.D.A. - Faces Of Freedom
Test Dept were an industrial music band formed in New Cross, London, by unemployed musicians (including Alastair Adams, Paul Jamrozy, Angus Farquhar, Graham Cunnington, Tony Cudlip, Toby Burdon and Paul Hines) from Glasgow, Scotland, where the band later re-located. Comedian Vic Reeves played bass in an early incarnation of the band. Formed in 1981, they are hailed by many musicians as one of the most influential early industrial music acts. Their approach was marked out by a strong commitment to radical politics.
Their discography spans a wide variety of influences and styles, including a collaboration with the South Wales Striking Miners Choir in support of the Miners' Strike of 1984. They were particularly notable for complex and powerful percussion, as well as high-energy live performances. Like the German band Einstürzende Neubauten, with whom they are often compared, Test Dept used unconventional instruments such as scrap metal and industrial machinery as sound sources; however, Test Dept's use of these objects was far more rhythmic than was Neubauten's, and was often accompanied by film and slide shows. The band played concerts in a number of unusual site-specific locations, such as Waterloo, Cannon Street station, Stirling Castle and the defunct St Rollox Railway Works in Glasgow.
In later years the band's music became less industrial and took on many of the properties of techno. The band's political stance was energised by the passing of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994.
The band split up in 1997, but its former members have continued to work in the fields of art and culture. For example, Angus Farquhar re-established the ancient Gaelic Beltane Fire Festival, held yearly on the night before/morning of the first of May on Edinburgh's Calton Hill. Farquhar also formed NVA, an innovative theatre company specialising in large-scale site-specific events. Cunnington, who suffers from chronic rheumatoid arthritis, produced a one-man show in 1996 called Pain, recounting his experiences as a sufferer from this condition.

Flesh & Fell - The Hunger
New-wave band from Brussels/Ostend from the middle of the eighties.
Flesh & Fell consisted initially of musician Pierre Goudesone and femme-fatale singer Cathérine Vanhoucke. The two of them moved from Ostend to Brussels and recorded a first demo - aided by Luc Van Acker - with which they started bombarding the record-firms. Despite being a new-wave band, they tried to gain some fame with a participation in the the Baccarabeker, but that dit no real good to neither the Baccarabeker nor to the group.
On one fine day, however, their demo landed in the hands of Jean-Marie Aerts (the guitar-player of TC Matic, and in those days producer of about everything that could handle a guitar in Belgium). JMX was so impressed with this demo that he opened some doors for the band (such as those of the ICP-studio in Brussels for the recording of a maxi, and those of Play It Again Sam for the distribution). The result of their cooperation was "The Hunger / Wind", a maxi with three songs.
"The Hunger" got a very warm welcome in the Belgian press : "disco hypnotique", "beat psychotique", "vocaux oppressés", "noisy big-city-music", "Belgien med öppna ögon". Reference points for the music were found in artists as diverse as Frank Tovey, Piaf and TC Matic (Humo reviewed them as a TC-Matic clone : "Jean-Marie has had a huge influence on the sound of the band. The singer imitates the phrasing of Arno Hintjens : power surges in the throath, dogbites in the lyrics. She even uses a sort of English that was invented by Arno, a sort of English that is completely original and will suprises many an Englishman." The English themselves did react somewhat lukewarm, because when the maxi was distributed in the UK, NME reacted with one lousy line : "good news for students! The Gang of Four are alive and well(ish) in Belgium".

ABT 409 - ABT 409
Back to the swiss underground in the 1980’s, travelling across the country, from one border town, basel, to the other border town, geneva. the genevan label helvete underground published a couple of very interesting records during the 1980s of very interesting, although i think quite forgotten bands. one record of this label. one of these i think also very shortlived bands was abt 409. again i do not know too much about them. a lot of raw energy, kind of a controlled rudeness - the attending punks were very impressed. so was i. the music is kind of square and hard - but thanks to the drumming and the bass with its metallic sound pretty funky. just that you don’t get the wrong idea: abt 409 consisted of drums, bass, bass, and voice. right, two times bass, no guitar. and you’re not even gonna miss it. and it explains the deep pressure of the music. the first track on the second side, eye witness, was for me just a hit. it actually still is. nothing i know about the band members - well, they were are also using rather…err…kryptic names. but two names on the sleeve are very much familiar and worth noting: roli mosimann for the production. yeah, that explains the tight drum-sounds. it’s a very crisp production anyway. and voco fauxpas as engineer - voco fauxpas might be one of the most often listed names on (not only) swiss underground records during the eighties.

Anne Clark - Our Darkness
Anne Clark was born in Croydon, South London on May 14th 1960 to an Irish mother and a Scottish father. She left school at sixteen. The constraints of her school education however couldn't quash her voracious appetite for music, books,an inquisitiveness and practical need to be involved with the world around her.
She took a number of jobs including working as a care assistant in a psychiatric hospital and then taking a job at Bonaparte Records, a local independent record store and label. This indeed was good timing! The punk rock scene was just about to explode into life in London. With her need for communication and disregard of formal institutions, along with so many people at the time, punk led the way to a whole new approach for dealing with music, arts, society itself. At that time anything and everything seemed possible.
During her time at the Warehouse Anne met David Harrow, co-writer on her second album Changing Places in 1983, Joined Up Writing in 1984 and Hopeless Cases in 1987. Anne and David's curiosity with keyboards, synths and samplers led them to create songs and sounds that would provide blueprints for the electronic music of the 80s and 90s - Sleeper In Metropolis........Our Darkness...

Newcleus - Automan
Although they recorded only two albums, Newcleus contributed one true electro classic in "Jam on Revenge (The Wikki-Wikki Song)," which has been immortalized on hundreds of hip-hop mixtapes and often included in even techno DJs' sets. The origins of Newcleus lay in a 1977 Brooklyn DJ collective known as Jam-On Productions, including Ben "Cozmo D" Cenac, his cousin Monique Angevin, and her brother Pete (all teenagers and still in high school). Many members - MCs as well as DJs - came and went as the group played block parties all over the borough, and by 1979, the group centered around Cenac, his future wife Yvette "Lady E" Cook, Monique Angevin, and her future husband, Bob "Chilly B" Crafton. (The foursome named their group Newcleus as a result of the coming together of their families). By this time, Cenac had begun to accumulate a collection of electronic recording equipment, and the quartet recorded a demo tape of material. With several minutes left at the end of the tape, Newcleus recorded a favorite from their block parties, with each member's vocals sped up to resemble the Chipmunks. The track, "Jam-On's Revenge" impressed producer Joe Webb more than the other Newcleus material, and it became the group's first single, released in 1983 on Mayhew Records. A huge street success, the track became known unofficially as "the Wikki-Wikki song" (after the refrain); when it was re-released later that year on Sunnyview Records, it had become "Jam on Revenge (The Wikki-Wikki Song)". The single hit Top 40 on the R&B charts in 1983, and its follow-up, "Jam on It," did well on even the pop charts. "Computer Age (Push the Button)" was a more mature single, with accomplished rapping and better synthesizer effects, and it also hit the R&B Top 40. The first Newcleus LP, Jam on Revenge, was a bit of a disappointment, and their second album, Space Is the Place, did even more poorly upon release in 1984. Without a single as noteworthy as "Jam on Revenge" or "Computer Age", and with the advent of Run-DMC's organic, rock-influenced approach to rap music, Newcleus faded quickly. Though the Cenacs and the Craftons continued to record sporadically until 1989, they didn't hit the R&B charts after 1986.

Eberhard Schoener - Why Don't You Answer
Eberhard Schoener (born May 13, 1938, Stuttgart) is a German composer, conductor, arranger, and keyboard player.
As a young man, Schoener travelled extensively through the Far East, and observed a wide range of religious as well as musical practices. This resulted in a conviction that all artists should embrace their own cultural heritage, but also be open to others. His music references and incorporates a wide range of influences and instrumentation, often merging non-European musical styles, natural and electronic sounds, voices, orchestral instrumentation, and rock instruments. His output varies considerably, with many diverse projects and events, and with no discernible trajectory of change over the years, making it difficult to summarise. His own website reflects these attitudes: "My message is the music. The goal of my life is to create an original form of contemporary music in which the opera, jazz, ethnical and electronic music melt together. I believe in emotionality."

Eberhard Schoener - Why Don't You Answer

No More - Suicide Commando
In 1981, the german band NO MORE landet an underground hit with SUICIDE COMMANDO, which in the following years spread internationally like a virus regardless of genre and scene.
Whether in the New Yorker Limelight or in an indie disco in the Ruhrgebiet, at the Love Parade in Berlin or the Parisian in-shop Colette, whether in a techno club in Tokyo or at the Sonar Festival in Barcelona:
SUICIDE COMMANDO was played everywhere and reached a status that made the title interesting for prominent remixers.
Not in the least thanks to the interpretation by DJ Hell or Echopark (Torsten Stenzel, Moguai), SUICIDE COMMANDO is as topical today as it was 25 years ago.
"A song that refuses to die. A couple of years after these Germans recorded this it spread like a virus to become a cult classic. The virus is still spreading to this day."

Kissing The Pink - The Other Side Of Heaven
Kissing the Pink are a dance/synth pop group from the United Kingdom. Members included Nick Whitecross, John Hall, George Stewart, Josephine Wells, Pete Barnett, Sylvia Griffin, Steve Cusack, and Simon Aldridge.
If Kissing the Pink's name sounds like sexual innuendo, it's because it is. The band eventually changed their appellation to the modest KTP. Often chastised by the U.K. press in the '80s, Kissing the Pink's music is not as suggestive as their name. The group's hybrid of soul, electronic experimentation, and synth-pop should've landed them hits when that sound was in flavor, but the band merely flirted with the Top 40 in England and was virtually unknown in America except for new wave diehards. Kissing the Pink was formed in 1980 at the Royal College of Music in London, England. All of the members lived together in the same house in North London. Comprised of Nick Whitecross (vocals, guitars), Jon Kingsley Hall (keyboards, vocals), Peter Barnett (bass, violin, vocals), Simon Aldridge (guitars, vocals), Stephen Cusack (drums, vocals), George Stewart (keyboards, vocals), and Josephine Wells (saxophone, vocals), Kissing the Pink released their first album, Naked, in 1983. By 1986, Kissing the Pink had shortened their name to KTP and recorded their most successful LP, Certain Things Are Likely. More commercial than any of their previous efforts, Certain Things Are Likely was Kissing the Pink's concession to their label Magnet's demand for a chart smash. The hits never really came, except that the title track reached number one on the Billboard dance charts; moreover, the single "One Step" went to number one in Italy. In 1988, KTP became Kissing the Pink once again. The group released Sugarland in 1993. After that, the band cut their roster to Whitecross, Hall, and Stewart, doing mainly production work for other artists. In 1999, Hall recorded Moving Into One, a trance CD, for his wife. Kissing the Pink collaborated with Steve Balsamo that year on a number of songs, but they were rejected by Sony and shelved.

Soul Sonic Force - Planet Rock
The Soulsonic Force (also referred to as Afrika Bambaataa & the Soulsonic Force) are an American hip-hop ensemble led by Afrika Bambaataa who helped established hip-hop in the early 1980s with songs such as Planet Rock. They were also influential in the birth of the electro movement in America and helped paved the way for modern dance music styles such as Techno and House, as well as hip-hop sub-genres such as electro-funk and electro-hop.
In 1982, Soulsonic Force and Afrika Bambaataa released a single called "Planet Rock". The song borrowed musical motifs from German electro-pop, British rock, and African-American disco rap. All the different elements and musical styles were blended together; and in doing so, they offered hip-hop as a new vision for global harmony. The song became an immediate hit and stormed the music charts worldwide.

Cabaret Voltaire - Yashar
Cabaret Voltaire were a British music group from Sheffield, England. Initially composed of Stephen Mallinder, Richard H. Kirk and Chris Watson, the group was named after the Cabaret Voltaire, a nightclub in Zurich, Switzerland that was a center for the early Dada movement. Their earliest performances were dada-influenced performance art, but Cabaret Voltaire later developed into one of the most prolific and important groups to blend pop with dance music, techno, dub house and experimental electronic music.

Tik & Tok - Summer In The City
In 1979 mime artists extraordinaire Tim Dry and Barbie Wilde united with disco champion dancers Robert Pereno, LA Richards and Karen Sparks to produce Shock; a rock / mime/burlesque/music troupe. In April 1980 they recruited another mime Sean Crawford who had a unique robotic act called Plastic Joe. The line up changed with the departure of Karen and the quick introduction and departure of Penny Dunlop who was finally replaced with long legged Carole Caplin. Shock performed in clubs like The Hacienda (Manchester) The Warehouse (Leeds) and The Blitz (London) With costumes from designers Kahn and Bell they found themselves in the vanguard of the New Romantic cult of the early '80's, alongside Boy George, Duran Duran, Adam Ant and Spandau Ballet. It was from the Blitz that their first record 'Angel Face' came, with production by Rusty Egan (Visage) and Richard Burgess (Landscape). In 81 Shock billed with Ultravox at the legendary 'People's Palace Valentine's Ball' atthe Rainbow Theatre. This was the moment when the New Romantic scene exploded and went from being an obscure cult to a global trend. Again Shock was at the front of things in the US when in March Ö81 in Downtown Manhattan they were asked to support a new artist called Prince. And the list of who they have worked with goes on but Shock did catch the eye of one super star which led onto their biggest live concert in April '81 and that was with Gary Numan at Wembley Arena.
